How do you create the effect of distance on each sound? I remember hearing distant gunfire and the noises subtly changing as I got closer to the battle. It was our aim that you could place the player in a random position on the map, shut your eyes and listen, and be able to tell where you are, and what time of day it is, and I think we’ve achieved that pretty well.ĭo you know how many individual sound effect files are in GTA IV? The ambient effects change dramatically based on your location in the city, the time of day, and so on – so it’s very dynamic, and obviously not just a pre-canned loop of ‘city ambience’. But we do also have a system of ambient sources to make the more distant city feel alive - what makes the two fit together so well is that they use exactly the same sounds, with exactly the same environmental effects, so it’s very hard to tell which is which. MS: Most of the time what you hear is really happening - what’s so great about GTA IV from an audio team’s perspective is that you hardly ever need to fake anything – the world’s so rich and so busy, that if you make individual things sound right, the whole ambience pretty much just appears by itself.

Stand in the street and you’ll hear three different radio stations at any one time coming from passing vehicles, all sounding appropriately tinny or boomy, depending on the type of vehicle and whether its doors are open, its windows broken, etc. It also let us scale up the complexity and amount of sounds that play at any one time, letting us flesh out a world as varied and detailed as GTA IV – at times we’re playing thousands of individual sounds simultaneously. For example, every sound in the game has its own filter, so it can appear muffled, and a unique amount and size of reverb - so a car horn coming from a tunnel 100m away sounds very different to a car horn right next to the player, instead of just being quieter as it might have been previously. MS: Perhaps the biggest change was the amount of environmental effects we can apply, by using Digital Signal Processing that was too expensive last-gen. What effect did the shift to more powerful hardware have on in-game audio? There is so much talk radio content in the GTA games, at least 24 hours’ worth, and I am already looking forward to the new ones in Grand Theft Auto 6, when it is developed, as well as in future GTA Online updates, including the next gen consoles versions.Matthew Smith, Craig Conner and Will Morton, three senior members of the Rockstar North Audio team. Fernado Martinez also returns in a separate show in which he gives advice to people, which shows us that he is still giving relationship advice. Ron, who is one of the contacts you work with in GTA Online, is the host for talk radio show and takes phone calls, with Trevor Philips calling in and leading to a bit of hilarity. WCTR and Blaine County Radio (GTA Online)

Sadly, you slowly learn that radio in GTA 4 is dying, as people on the streets recognise Lazlow, which gets him into some trouble at the end. Lazlow returns on his own radio station, where he actually is out on the streets.

In GTA 4 these three radio stations are packed full of shows and talk radio content, as well as in-game celebrity’s. WKTT Radio, Public Liberty Radio, and Integrity 2.0 (GTA 4) There were also shows that had other radio presenters, such as Area 53 and The Wild Traveller – two shows which gave the talk radio station some of its funniest moments. WCTR (West Coast Talk Radio) is packed with shows that introduced the player to various characters and also saw the return of Lazlow, who was actually a caller who gets mocked by the two radio presenters, the Philips. It was the debut of Maurice Chavez, a radio presenter who can be repeatedly heard getting himself into hilarious yet troubled situations. K-Chat was a talk radio show that interviewed celebrities in the GTA game world, as did VCPR (Vice City Public Radio) which had many shows which also featured civilians. K-Chat and VCPR (Vice City/Vice City Stories) Fernado Martinez from Vice City’s Emotion FM is also a guest on Chatterbox. Some of the phone calls are very funny and are enjoyable to listen to while just driving around the city or relaxing in the vehicles.

The debut of Lazlow, where he would take phone calls from people in Liberty City as well as interview various celebrities in the GTA world.
